Miller Says Metro Council Will Let Auditor, LMPD Investigate Shanklin

Louisville Metro Councilman Jerry Miller, R-19, says he agrees with the Jefferson County Attorney that the Government Accountability and Ethics Committee should hold off on investigating purported ethics violations by Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin, D-2.He also confirmed that the Louisville Metro Police Public Integrity Unit is investigating the matter. Shanklin has not been contacted by the LMPD and a majority caucus spokesman says the LMPD has not pulled any records from the council.Shanklin has come under scrutiny in recent weeks for the way she handled an upholstery training program. The program received city funds, and was meant to train ex-offenders, but Shanklin and her family members seem to have been major beneficiaries.Miller chairs the GAE committee. In a statement, he said he’ll give the city's internal auditor and the LMPD the time they need to do their jobs. "My chief concern is that we not interfere with ongoing investigations, and maintain the ability of the Metro Council to hold a removal process/court if it is deemed necessary. Had the Metro Council proceeded with an investigation of its own, it could have jeopardized our ability to take any other punitive actions, if they are warranted, and that would truly be a disservice to everyone."Shanklin released a statement in response to Miller's announcement and news of the police probe, denying any wrongdoing while agreeing to cooperate with any review of the upholstery program. "As I have said since these newspaper stories began, I have done nothing wrong in my service to my community. I was unaware of an investigation by the Metro Police Public Integrity Unit but I welcome any review of what I have done and I look forward to cooperating with any investigation."
