Distillers Help Fund UK, U of L Alcohol Awareness Programs

Alcohol awareness programs at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville will continue to receive financial support  from two Kentucky distilleries.  Jim Beam and Brown-Forman are giving a combined $600,000 to the schools to bolster efforts to combat underage and binge drinking across the Commonwealth.

UK to Host Carbon Capture Workshop

Carbon capture has been out of the news lately, as many power plants have abandoned efforts to capture and store carbon dioxide. But the University of Kentucky says the technology is still relevant.

UK’s Center for Applied Energy Research will host a carbon capture workshop in September. It’s meant for utility members and researchers to learn more about the technology.

Family Foundation Criticizes U of L Administration Over Chick-Fil-A Comments

The Family Foundation of Kentucky is criticizing members of the University of Louisville administration for their response to a controversy surrounding Chick-Fil-A.

For weeks, criticism has been leveled at Chick-Fil-A because it’s CEO, Dan Cathy, said recently he believes marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Cathy and his company are well-known for their Christian beliefs. Notably, Chick-Fil-A restaurants are closed on Sundays.

Promising Alzheimer's Drug Being Developed At UK

A class of drugs developed by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Kentucky could help reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Linda Van Eldik of UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging says the drug targets inflammation in the brain.

“So we administered the drug early in the course of the disease, just when these pro-inflammatory molecules are beginning to develop. And by doing that, we reduced the inflammation back down to normal and we prevented the nerve cell damage and the behavioral deficits,” she said.
