Sierra Club to Hold Rally Against Coal at UK

The Sierra Club is planning a rally at noon today at the University of Kentucky to protest the ties between the school's athletic department and the coal industry.

UK and the coal industry have a fairly close relationship--the men's basketball dorm is called the Wildcat Coal Lodge, after coal industry contributions, and there have been prominent coal advertisements during some athletic events.

Louisville Environmental Activist Wins National Award

Louisville resident Kathy Little has been selected to receive a national award from the Sierra Club for her activism opposing the coal-fired Cane Run Power Plant.

Little has lived across the street from the Cane Run Power Station in southwest Louisville for decades. But in recent years, she’s organized residents and challenged utility company Louisville Gas and Electric on its handling of coal ash at the site.

A Primer on Sulfur Dioxide and the Latest Sierra Club Report

A new report from by the Sierra Club estimates how much sulfur dioxide is emitted from nine Kentucky power plants and it finds that all nine of them—including the Mill Creek and Cane Run power plants in Louisville—are violating the national air quality standards.

Sulfur dioxide has been linked to health issues like pulmonary inflammation, asthma, emphysema and other lung conditions.
