Indiana voters would decide in next year's election whether to add the right to hunt, fish and farm to the state constitution under a proposal approved by state senators.

The Indiana Senate voted 38-10 today  in favor of the proposed amendment. It would go before voters in the 2014 general election if the House also approves the proposal.

Indiana would join 17 other states, including Kentucky, with similar constitutional protections for hunting and fishing. Supporters say the measures are needed because those activities are threatened by animal-rights activists.

A proposal to amend Indiana’s constitution to guarantee residents the right to hunt, fish and farm has cleared a legislative committee.

The Senate Agriculture Committee voted 7-0 today to advance the measure, which now goes to the full Senate.

The proposal is sponsored by Republican Sen. Brent Steele, who says hunting and farming are being threatened by animal-rights activists and other groups.

Indiana lawmakers have delayed action on a proposed state constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right of residents to hunt, fish and farm.

The state Senate's agriculture committee had scheduled a public hearing on the proposal Monday but postponed it until next week after using its meeting time on unrelated bills.
