EIA Data Shows Natural Gas, Coal Generation Equal for First Time

For the first time since the federal government has begun collecting data, natural gas and coal produce virtually the same amount of the country’s electricity.

The Energy Information Administration just crunched its numbers for this past April, and preliminary data shows that both coal and natural gas make up about 32 percent of the country’s total electricity generation.

LG&E Cited for Gas Safety Violations

The Kentucky Public Service Commission has cited Louisville Gas & Electric for safety violations that led to a natural gas explosion in December. The explosion in South Louisville destroyed a house, and the PSC determined that there were problems with LG&E's emergency response. The company was also cited for violations related to gas line pressure in the system.

Louisville Gas and Electric is seeking permits to install advanced pollution controls at its Mill Creek power plant in southwest Louisville. The company is taking the steps to comply with upcoming federal regulations that will limit the amount of pollution power plants can emit.

LG&E Seeks Rate Increase, Citing Infrastructure Investments

Louisville Gas and Electric will request a rate increase later this month from the Kentucky Public Service Commission.

The company is proposing an increase of about seven percent for both electric and gas base rates. If it’s approved, it will raise the typical residential customer’s bill by about $10.65 per month beginning next year.

LG&E spokeswoman Chris Whelan says the rate increase is necessary for the company to recover money it has invested in the system.

Report Ranks Three Kentucky Power Plants Among Nation's Biggest Polluters

Three Kentucky coal-fired power plants are named among the biggest polluters in the nation in a new report.

The Environmental Integrity Project analyzed the fifty-one U.S. power plants that emit the highest levels of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which have been linked to premature deaths from heart and lung disease.
