House Leaders Considering Instant Racing Legalization to Help Pay for Pensions

Kentucky House leaders are considering legalizing Instant Racing across Kentucky to help plug the funding gap in the state's pensions.

Instant Racing is a slots-like game currently played at two Kentucky tracks, Ellis Park and Kentucky Downs. The legality of the game is also currently being litigated at the Kentucky Supreme Court.

But if the General Assembly passes a bill authorizing it, the court case would be moot.

Ellis Park May Take On Partner

The owner of western Kentucky’s Ellis Park racetrack says he’s nearing a deal to take on a business partner.

A company associated with New York Saratoga Casino and Raceway wants to buy a 30-percent stake in Ellis Park. Owner Ron Geary says his new partners would take over day-to-day opertations.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is reviewing the proposed $4 million deal.

Instant Racing Case Again Appealed to State Supreme Court

Supporters of instant racing in Kentucky are once again trying to take their case to the state supreme court. Instant racing games allow players to wager on previously-run horse races using slot-machine like-devices. The Franklin Circuit Court previously ruled that the games are legal, but an appeals court sent the decision back, saying  the anti-gambling Family Foundation should've been allowed to gather evidence in the case.  Now horse industry officials are appealing that decision in hopes of taking the case to the state supreme court.
