The largest teachers union in Tennessee  is quietly on board with allowing educators to carry a weapon to class—at least as a last resort.

The Tennessee Education Association is supporting a bill under consideration by the state legislature, but the union would prefer teachers not need to bring a gun to school, President Gera Summerford said. 

“I think the way we would look at it is, it’s the responsibility of law enforcement-trained personnel," Summerford.

Freshman Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly is opposing a ban on assault weapons sought by President Barack Obama.

A Donnelly spokesman told The Associated Press Wednesday that the Indiana lawmaker will vote against the ban but has not decided whether he would support universal background checks.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer says President Obama's proposal for gun control laws are rational and that he'd like to see new legislation passed.

But those comments are in stark contrast to a state law that is forcing changes to the city's definition of deadly weapons and now allow firearms to be carried in city-owned buildings.

Congressman John Yarmuth of Louisville says Sen. Mitch McConnell should apologize for an e-mail McConnell’s campaign sent to supporters last week.

The communication was from the Republican’s campaign manager, Jesse Benton, and its subject line was, “Watch Out, They’re Coming For Your Guns.”

Yarmuth, a Democrat, says it was an attempt to distort the 23 executive actions on gun control announced recently by President Obama.
