Yoder Presses Young Over Akin 'Legitimate Rape' Comments

In Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District race, Democratic challenger Shelli Yoder is calling on Republican incumbent Todd Young to denounce Missouri Congressman Todd Akin’s controversial comments.

But the GOP lawmaker has already spoken out against the recent statements in a televised interview earlier this week.

Akin made national headlines for saying that women who are "legitimately raped" rarely get pregnant. Other Republicans have urged him to drop out, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Akin’s Senate campaign "has no future."

Yoder says Hoosiers of all political backgrounds have come up to her on the campaign trail and are disgusted with Akin's remarks.

"I want to know why hasn’t Todd Young come out with a statement on something that’s really deplorable in thought," she says.

Howard Dean's PAC Gets Behind Yoder’s Uphill Battle

Democrat Shelli Yoder

A political action committee founded by former Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Governor Howard Dean is backing Shelli Yoder in Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District race.

Democracy for America unveiled six key races for Congress on Wednesday that the organization will focus on in the 2012 election. The PAC is aimed at building a dozen "progressive powerhouse" in the House and this is the first crop attempting to give Democratic challengers a booster in their general election bids.

Yoder is challenging Republican incumbent Todd Young, but has struggled to keep face with the GOP freshman's fundraising totals.

She says it is an honor to receive Dean’s support and she hopes it will give her campaign a boost.

"We are continuing to work hard and we’re doing everything we can to win back this seat. I think that the 9th District, folks weren’t really paying attention to the race. But in the last few weeks we’ve certainly have work as hard as we can making sure that voters feel like they will have a voice and an opportunity to gain back that voice come November 6," he says.

Davis Passes REINS Act to Young

Retiring Congressman Geoff Davis, R-Ky. announced Wednesday that fellow GOP Congressman Todd Young, R-In., will take over lead sponsorship of the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act.

For three years Davis has championed the legislation as a way to spur economic growth and tackle burdensome regulation. The REINS Act would require that Congress take an up-or-down vote on any major rules that would have more than $100 million annual economic impact.

The bill passed the GOP-controlled House last winter, but it went nowhere in the Democratic Senate. Davis announced last December he was not seeking re-election but that Young will take the lead on the REINS Act in the future.

"Todd Young is one of the hardest-working and most diligent new members of Congress. He has enthusiastically championed the REINS Act at home and in Washington," Davis said in a news release. "Congress has excessively delegated its constitutional responsibility for making the law of the land to unelected bureaucrats for too long.  The REINS Act is one of the most important structural reforms to restore this accountability.  I am confident that Congressman Young will be a tireless champion for the REINS Act going forward."

In Indiana Congressional Race, Yoder Reports Sluggish Second Quarter Fundraising

In the Indiana Ninth congressional district race, Democrat Shelli Yoder has filed a tepid fundraising report.

Yoder is a political newcomer and she brought in just over $93,000 in the second quarter of this year. She faces Republican incumbent Todd Young, who garnered $311,000 in the same period. According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, Yoder has $73,000 total on hand, compared to the nearly $900,000 in Young’s coffers.
