U of L, UK Advance in Women's NCAA; U of L Men to Face Oregon Friday; IU vs Syracuse Thursday

The Louisville Cardinals and Kentucky Wildcats are both off to a winning start in the women’s NCAA basketball tournament.

The fifth-seeded Cardinals defeated Middle Tennessee State 74-49 Sunday, while number two seed Kentucky beat Navy 61-41.

U of L will face Purdue Tuesday in second round play at the KFC Yum Center.   Kentucky takes on Dayton Tuesday in Queens, New York.   Both games tip off at 7:00pm.

In the men’s tournament, the Louisville Cardinals return to action this week.

U of L faces Oregon Friday in Indianapolis.

IU Advances in NCAA Tournament, 83-62

The  Indiana Hoosiers won their men's NCAA tournament opener today, easily defeating James Madison 83-62 in Dayton, Ohio.

Yogi Ferrell led Indiana with 16 points and was one of five Hoosiers to score in double figures.  

IU, the number one seed in the East Region, will take on Temple Sunday in third round action.  The Owls advanced with a 76-72 win over North Carolina State.

The Louisville Cards resume tournament play Saturday in Lexington, taking on Colorado State.

Louisville Cardinals Roll in NCAA Tournament Opener, 79-48

The Louisville Cardinals have advanced in the men’s NCAA tournament, easily winning their opener 79-48 over North Carolina A&T tonight in Lexington.

Russ Smith led the Cards with 23 points and eight steals.    

U of L, the tournament’s top overall seed, will face Colorado State Saturday in third round tournament action at Rupp Arena.

The 16th-seeded Aggies finished their season with a 20-17 record.

Louisville Cards Begin NCAA Title Quest in Lexington

With the number one overall seed, a Big East Tournament title and a nine-game winning streak on its resume,  the University of Louisville begins play in the men’s NCAA basketball tournament tomorrow  in Lexington.  

The Cards take on North Carolina A&T, which defeated Liberty in Tuesday’s play-in game.  It was the Aggies’ first-ever NCAA tournament victory.

U of L senior guard Peyton Siva says the Cards are clicking—as a team--at the right time.

Kentucky Wildcats Ousted From NIT by Robert Morris, 59-57; Bellarmine Falls in NCAA Div. II

The season is over for the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team.

The top-seeded Wildcats were defeated 59-57 tonight by Robert Morris University in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Robert Morris jumped out to an early lead before a sellout home crowd of 3,000 in Moon Township, Pennsylvania and held off several Kentucky runs.   

UK missed a three-pointer as time expired and Robert Morris fans stormed the court in celebration.   The Colonials will face either Providence or Charlotte in the second round of the NIT.

With the NCAA's Top Seed, Pitino's Cards Set Sights on Next Goal

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says his team has worked hard to earn its top overall seed in the NCAA tournament, but the Cards are not dwelling on the designation.

Pitino says its one of many steps toward the ultimate goal of winning a national championship.

"When we lost three in a row, we set goals.   We set regular season goals, we set tournament goals, we set seeding goals.  Now you go on to your next goal.  Until it ends, you just keep putting forth goals to your basketball team," Pitino said today.
