Jefferson County has nearly 700 childcare programs in operation, but officials say program quality varies widely. 

A Franklin Circuit Court judge has ordered a state agency to resume payments for a subsidy program to 18 Louisville child care centers notified last month that they were being pulled from the program after a fraud investigation.

Kentucky ranks 39th in the U.S. for the state of its child care centers—earning high marks for posting complaint records online but poor marks for not  requiring center directors to have bachelor's degrees, says a new report.

The report, from Child Care Aware of America, said Kentucky could improve its child care center's regulations by requiring state and federal fingerprints for checking criminal backgrounds and changing its educational requirements for lead teachers.

The report also suggests that Kentucky adjust its ratios for staff to children.

Child care operators whose licenses are revoked will have to wait seven years—instead of the previous three years—before being able to open a new day care under new Kentucky regulations put in place as the state took action against 18 Louisville day cares.
