Power Pop Love: 'Girlfriend' Musical Opens at Actors Theatre

It’s been called the best power pop album of all time. Matthew Sweet’s “Girlfriend” is a beautiful paradox – a break-up album that is lyrically devastating but sonically optimistic, and it features a killer roster of musicians, including Lloyd Cole, Television’s Richard Lloyd and both members of the Indigo Girls. The 1991 anime-style video made Sweet an MTV star, back when music videos were still the reason to watch MTV.

LVAA Opens New Gallery on Whiskey Row

The Louisville Visual Art Association’s new downtown gallery is open.  As part of its downtown relocation, LVAA has opened a gallery called Public in Whiskey Row Lofts (131 W. Main St.). The first invitational exhibit, "Public @ Public," features fifteen local artists who created new work illuminated by lightboxes exploring the public theme.

Ballet Showcase: Dancers Stretch into Choreographer Roles

If you’re used to only seeing the Louisville Ballet dance in Whitney Hall or the Brown Theatre, the upcoming Choreographers' Showcase is a chance to see the company in a whole new light as it premieres new work in its intimate, informal studio on East Main Street.

Twelve new pieces choreographed by members of the dance company will make their debuts. Choreographers' Showcase runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with performances at 8 p.m. Space in the studio is limited, so advance ticket purchase is recommended (call the Ballet box office at 583-2623).
