Ozone Levels Were Unexpectedly High Yesterday

There was no air quality alert in effect yesterday, but air quality monitors show that ozone levels were at unhealthy levels in at least two areas.

The Cannons Lane monitor recorded levels at 83 parts per billion, which translates to an Air Quality Index of 119. At Watson Lane Elementary, levels were at 90 parts per billion, which is an AQI of 137. Levels between 101 and 150 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

This was the 17th day with an ozone exceedance so far this year.

Ozone is created when pollution from cars and smokestacks cooks in summer heat. Louisville’s seen a lot of it lately, and nearly every week there’s been at least one warning that the air outside could be unhealthy for at least some people.

The city's air is expected to be a 122 on the Air Quality Index tomorrow, which is unhealthy for sensitive groups. It's predicted to be slightly lower on Thursday--a 116--but still unhealthy for sensitive groups. These are the 15th and 16th Air Quality Alerts of the summer.
