Judge Will Open Savannah Dietrich Case Files

A Jefferson District Circuit Judge will open the files surrounding the Savannah Dietrich case. The County Attorney's office confirms that Judge Angela McCormick Bisig has ordered the case to be opened in response to a request filed by the Courier-Journal newspaper. Dietrich, 17, first made national headlines earlier this summer. She was sexually assaulted, then, after a juvenile court proceeding, tweeted the names of her attackers in response to what she felt was too light a sentence from the judge. Because juvenile court cases are confidential, Dietrich faced a contempt charge. It was eventually withdrawn after the story was picked up by media outlets across the country. The story took another turn last week when an attorney for one of the boys named in Dietrich's tweet told the Huffington Post that his client's life had been ruined:

"He's had to move," David Mejia, the attorney for one of the attackers, told The Huffington Post. "He has lost all the potential that was there. He was attending high school and was kicked out. He was on course to a scholarship to an Ivy League school to play sports and that may be jeopardized. He's in therapy. He's just overwhelmed and devastated by what started from the conduct of this young girl saying false things as she did."
