A Kentucky educational review subcommittee has killed a regulatory change that would have removed readers from helping certain students with disabilities and English language learners on reading comprehension tests.

The new regulation would have brought the state in line with a majority of its peers, but the Education Assessment and Accountability Review Subcommittee found the changes deficient, despite the Kentucky Board of Education’s approval earlier this year.

A train derailed in southwestern Jefferson County this morning, and emergency personnel have reported that the chemical butadiene is leaking from a railcar. People living near Abbotts Beach Road in Jefferson County and Katherine Station Road in Bullitt County have been evacuated, and there's a shelter-in-place with a two-mile radius from the spill. The Kentucky Opera continues its 60th anniversary season this week with a company premiere of the timeless fairy tale "Cinderella." Directed by John de los Santos and conducted by Emmanuel Plasson, Jules Massenet’s romantic comic opera plays Friday evening and Sunday afternoon in the Brown Theatre.

While Massenet’s original opera was composed in French, Kentucky Opera will perform in English.

Several days of lectures and discussions about sustainability kick off this Thursday in Louisville.

First, there’s the Campus Community Partnerships for Sustainability Conference. It’s co-hosted by Jefferson Community and Technical College and the University of Louisville, and features two days of events. Then, beginning Friday, Bluegrass Bioneers is coming back to town.

David Williams' exit as Kentucky State Senate president will likely stir a recurring major issue: gambling.

The leading Kentucky state Senate Democrat said senate  President David Williams's departure should bring new life to efforts to bring casino gambling to Kentucky racetracks, while a leading voice against expanded gaming said the move was politically motivated.

In college football, the Kentucky Wildcats dropped their seventh straight game, losing 33-10 at Missouri today.

UK was plagued by turnovers. The Wildcats had three fumbles that resulted in Missouri touchdowns.

Kentucky falls to 1-8 on the season and 0-5 in the Southeastern Conference.

The Tigers notched their first conference victory and evened their overall record to 4-4.

UK hosts Vanderbilt next Saturday.

The Indiana Hoosiers snapped a five-losing streak, defeating host Illinois 31-17.
