Kentucky Continues Allowing "Readers" for Learning Challenged Students

A Kentucky educational review subcommittee has killed a regulatory change that would have removed readers from helping certain students with disabilities and English language learners on reading comprehension tests.

The new regulation would have brought the state in line with a majority of its peers, but the Education Assessment and Accountability Review Subcommittee found the changes deficient, despite the Kentucky Board of Education’s approval earlier this year.

Two Groups Supporting Separate School Board Candidates

Leading up to the Nov. 6 election, two political action committees (PAC) are supporting two separate Jefferson County Board of Education candidates. 

The Bluegrass Fund--formed this year to offer support to alternative candidates from those backed by the teachers union’s Better Schools Kentucky PAC--recently announced its endorsement for District 4 candidate Chuck Haddaway, and in a new radio ad airing this week is also supporting District 7 candidate Jonathan Robertson.

Glass Slippers and Stepsisters: Opera Opens Cinderella

  • A preview of the Kentucky Opera's premiere of "Cinderella" - "Try to look your best" and "Come on, let us go!" from the WUOL Lunchtime Classics performance.

The Kentucky Opera continues its 60th anniversary season this week with a company premiere of the timeless fairy tale "Cinderella." Directed by John de los Santos and conducted by Emmanuel Plasson, Jules Massenet’s romantic comic opera plays Friday evening and Sunday afternoon in the Brown Theatre.

While Massenet’s original opera was composed in French, Kentucky Opera will perform in English.

U of L to Hold Conferences Examining Multiple Aspects of Sustainability

Several days of lectures and discussions about sustainability kick off this Thursday in Louisville.

First, there’s the Campus Community Partnerships for Sustainability Conference. It’s co-hosted by Jefferson Community and Technical College and the University of Louisville, and features two days of events. Then, beginning Friday, Bluegrass Bioneers is coming back to town.

Train Derailment: Evacuation, Road Closures Expected to Last At Least 24 Hours

Update: 5:40 p.m.

Evacuations and the shelter-in-place warning are still in effect late Monday afternoon after the morning train derailment in southwestern Jefferson County, said Jody Duncan, the MetroSafe spokeswoman. A shelter is being set up at the Nichols Fire Station No. 3 at 130 Meicel Lane in Bullitt County, about nine miles west of Shepherdsville.

Anyone who wants use the shelter space is asked to call the Red Cross at 561-3642.

The leading Kentucky state Senate Democrat said senate  President David Williams's departure should bring new life to efforts to bring casino gambling to Kentucky racetracks, while a leading voice against expanded gaming said the move was politically motivated.

College Football: UK falls at Missouri; IU topples Illinois

In college football, the Kentucky Wildcats dropped their seventh straight game, losing 33-10 at Missouri today.

UK was plagued by turnovers. The Wildcats had three fumbles that resulted in Missouri touchdowns.

Kentucky falls to 1-8 on the season and 0-5 in the Southeastern Conference.

The Tigers notched their first conference victory and evened their overall record to 4-4.

UK hosts Vanderbilt next Saturday.

The Indiana Hoosiers snapped a five-losing streak, defeating host Illinois 31-17.
