Orchestra Stages Multimedia Tribute to Copland and Mexico

The Louisville Orchestra pays tribute to American composer Aaron Copland’s Mexican-influenced compositions this week with a multimedia program that infuses humanities content into classical music performance. Created by music scholar Joseph Horowitz, Music Unwound’s “Copland and Mexico” will span multiple events in Louisville this week, including partnerships with the Louisville Visual Art Association and the University of Louisville School of Music.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Avery Fisher Career Grant-winning pianist Chu-Fang Huang has canceled her solo appearance with the Louisville Orchestra this Thursday and Friday. Performing a solo instead will be the University of Louisville's Dror Biran, playing Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto.

Louisville Orchestra Players Have New Three-Year Contract

The Louisville Orchestra announced a new multi-year labor agreement with its musicians today.

The one-year bridge agreement that ended the orchestra's 11-month labor dispute last April called for a 30-week season for 57 players. The agreement also required an orchestra consultant who would make binding employment recommendations for the musicians and management policies, as well as ensure a multi-year agreement.

The Louisville Orchestra named arts consultant and orchestra veteran David Hyslop interim CEO at a board of directors meeting today. Hyslop will serve as interim CEO while the Orchestra conducts a national search. Current CEO Robert Birman announced his resignation earlier this month.

Louisville Orchestra CEO Robert Birman will leave his post at the end of this month. The orchestra announced his resignation Saturday morning.

“I leave on a high note,” says Birman. “I’m very proud of the players and my board and my staff. Everybody is pulling in one direction, and for that reason I thought this was an appropriate time to make this announcement.”

The Louisville Orchestra welcomes guest conductor Ryan McAdams to the Kentucky Center this weekend, and a familiar face from the wind section will also take the spotlight.

McAdams will lead the Orchestra in Friday’s performance, which includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherezade,” inspired by the classic tales of “1001 Arabian Nights,” and the Louisville premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s “Sidereus,” a nine-minute overture commissioned by a consortium of 35 orchestras.

Kentucky Native Joins Orchestra for Special Concert

The Louisville Orchestra will thank its donors with a special concert on December 5 at the Brown Theatre. The program is free for supporters of the season, but all are welcome to make a donation at the door in lieu of tickets. Led by music director Jorge Mester, the program will feature Gioachino Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville, Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor and Wolfgang Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor.
