Denton Files Two Bills To Place Affordable Care Act Decisions in Lawmakers' Hands

State Sen. Julie Denton has filed two bills that would put control of implementation of the Affordable Care Act into lawmakers’ hands.

Gov. Steve Beshear created a state-run health exchange through an executive order and is mulling whether to expand Medicaid. Both are parts of the ACA, also known as Obamacare.

Denton says her goal is to let lawmakers have some say in either matter.

Tea Party Activists Tell Kentucky Lawmakers to Reject Obamacare

FRANKFORT—As the 2013 Kentucky legislative session begins, Tea Party activists are encouraging lawmakers to abandon the implementation of the Affordable Care Act — also known as Obamacare — in the state because of fiscal and health care concerns.

About 50 activists rallied in the Capitol Rotunda Tuesday; they wanted their state legislators to hear their concerns as the 2013 legislative session began.

Legislators Unlikely to Put State Health Exchange into Law

Gov. Steve Beshear will likely have to re-issue his executive order to keep the state’s health exchange running.

Beshear started the exchange — part of the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare — earlier this year through an executive order and state health officials have forged ahead with its creation.

But unless the Kentucky General Assembly takes up the issue to puts it into law, it's likely Beshear’s original order will have to be re-issued to keep work on the exchange moving forward.

John Schnatter: Papa John's Franchisees May Cut Hours Because of Obamacare

John Schnatter, founder and chief executive of Louisville-based Papa John's, said last week that some of the company's franchisees were likely to reduce employees' hours to avoid offering health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

"That's probably what's going to happen," Schnatter told college students on Wednesday in Naples, Fla., according the Naples Daily News. "It's common sense. That's what I call lose-lose."

A key part of the Affordable Care Act will be implemented by executive order in Kentucky if the healthcare law is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Exchanges in which residents can purchase insurance are a major part of the law. Each state must have an exchange, and if states don't set them up, the federal government will.

Governor Steve Beshear says he will sign an executive order to create a state-run exchange if the law is upheld.

Poll Shows Kentuckians Support Universal Healthcare, But Not Federal Healthcare Law

A new poll shows Kentuckians are becoming increasingly aware of the commonwealth’s health issues and willing to act on them.

The Kentucky Health Issues Poll is conducted annually by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. The latest poll for last year was just released this week and found many Kentuckians worry about childhood obesity and depression.
