Louisville Metro officials are increasingly confident the city will qualify for federal disaster aid for public damage after last week’s flood, but they aren’t so sure private citizens will be eligible for individual relief.

Emergency Management Director Doug Hamilton says 35 FEMA staffers were in Louisville yesterday to assess damage done to private homes. He says the teams visited 824 residences.

“Of the 305 homes they classified as affected/damaged by the flood last week, only five of them are insured. Five of 305,” says Hamilton, “so it’s losses like that that may kick in the potential for aid that is not a loan. But it’s very tentative.”

The reports compiled by the FEMA workers will be used in the governor’s request for federal disaster aid.
