Wayside and others like them need to be responsive to the concerns of their neighbors both commercial and residential. They were forced from the East Market area for multiple good reasons, local businesses were concerned with the lack of maintenance and upkeep on the Wayside property (walk around the current facility on Market to see what the concern is.), and another reason was the residents were causing the problems for local residents ( panhandling the businesses customers, defecating and urinating in public space and on private properties, and the local police officers have said they are called to the Market location more than any other location in the area (Approx. 45% of the emergency calls to the district call center.).
As intelligent and informed citizens of Louisville we need to make decisions based on the facts and not on the hype. It is easy to condemn the EMBA/EDBA for not supporting Wayside mission in their quest to house all the worlds homeless, but the fact is that until they are responsible community members they can not expect to be meet with open arms anywhere.

That is a funny statement since Wayside Christian Mission has had their clients and staff involved in Brightside and many other neighborhood clean-up projects since their inception. You can bark all day long about how Wayside has been a bad neighbor to the Market St. area, but it simply not the case. The EDBA/EMBD sure have their own brand of neighborly love and they aren't afraid to show it either. By approaching a landmarks commission to obtain a historic landmark permit for land they did not own in order to force a business off the block for a pittance, these business owners hid behind their greed and spoiled the best laid plans of a community service that is essential to the workings of Louisville. Marinade on that for a minute.

Bleat all you like about their great work but Wayside has a horrible reputation for dealiung with their neighborhood and neighbors. Just ask anyone that worked or owned a business on east Market. They cause the problems and then hide behind their mission. Enough!

I am so excited for the people of the Wayside Community. As a Mercy Alumni, I am saddened that such opposition and cruel heartedness was met by the people of the Upper Highlands neighborhood. I believe that Wayside's mission was very similar to the founder of the Mercy sisters, Sister Catherine McAuley. She would have fought to have the Wayside community rest its head at the former home of such a wonderful establishment that is the high school (formerly on Broadway).
I wonder just what kind of institution or company will purchase the building, as there is a very limited number of uses available to such a place.
I wish Wayside the very best on 2nd and Broadway and as a citizen living in Old Louisville, I would like to extend my warm welcome to everyone belonging to the Wayside Christian Mission to the neighborhood!
